The Hip

In this week鈥檚 Case Notes, Dr Mark Porter discusses the hip.

The hip is one of the body鈥檚 most mobile joints, but living longer lives and pursuing more active lifestyles puts a severe strain on it.

The number of people needing partial or complete hip replacements is on the increase. In the UK alone, more than 80,000 hip operations are carried out each year.

Mark is joined in the studio by two orthopaedic surgeons: John Skinner from the Royal National Orthopaedic Hospital in Middlesex, and Peter Kay from Wrightington Hospital in Lancashire.

They discuss the hip with Mark, and they talk about the latest developments in artificial hip technology.

Mark visits the Corin Group factory, one of the UK鈥檚 largest manufacturers of artificial hips, and talks to their Chief Executive Officer, Ian Paling.

Mark also hears from listeners who have their own stories to tell. One woman had her hip replaced 38 years ago, and it鈥檚 still going strong.
