Lung Cancer & the Smoking Ban

In this week鈥檚 edition of Case Notes, Dr Mark Porter discusses lung cancer and the impact of the English ban on smoking in public places which is due to come into force on 1st July 2007.

To put the English ban in context, Mark talks to Dr Paul Cavanagh from the Irish government鈥檚 Department of Health and Children. Ireland introduced its smoking ban on 29th March 2004. So far, the evidence shows that the health of bar workers has improved and that significant numbers of people have given up smoking as a direct consequence of the ban.

Mark visits a smoking clinic in west London. He talks to Dr Alex Bobak about the success rates for different types of treatments and support. He hears from two ex-smokers about how they gave up.

He also goes to the European Scanning Centre in Harley Street, and talks to Dr Paul Jenkins about CT scans, and their ability to identify small nodules 3-4mm in size.

Mark鈥檚 studio guest this week is Sam Janes, a respiratory physician based at the Centre for Respiratory Research at University College London. Sam talks about the importance of early diagnosis of lung cancer, and the range of treatments currently available.
