"Cat on a hot tin roof"

Hi I.B ers hope you all enjoying this fantastic weather and getting you gardens in order.

Its nice to see the lambing season on the move I thought I would take a picture of the little cheeky fellows which Holly enjoys watching.

On the job front it is working really well and have nice customers, its so nice to work the hours that suit me, to get other works done on my property, the next job on the house is to lay a new 2 car off street parking area....so this weekend we will strip back the grass dig up and drop in the hardcore, then lay the cement.

Well weather permitting....Oh the veg in the poly tunnel is doing great, Beetroot is now showing, Radishes, Lettice, Tomatoes....No peppers yet? then I have now planted the courgettes, Broccoli, Spinach, then to follow Cabbage, Corn, and Tatties.

Fred, oh fred, you make me feel so tired just reading about all the things you get done! Good for you.

Barney from Swithiod a bit exhausted

I am just SO looking...and looking...and LOOKING for that cat on the tin roof, but all I can see is futurefood for felines. Baaah!

Flying Cat from not to be sneezed at

Hey Fred, with that list of yummy veg you'll have IBers flocking round for tea. I'll have an egg salad, please... Wishing you continued good luck!

Jill from EK

Barney, almost finished the hardcore and cementing....LOL just to let you know ;o) FC very funny, but they do look GOOD.....Jill you know you will alway be welcome, if you not quick enough TWS might get a salad before you.

Fred from Point

The hard work is never done Fred. Can't beat tucking into veg you've grown yourself. The closest I've come is a tomato plant; though the fruits stayed green which was a bit disappointing.

Carol from IBHQ

Fried Green Tomatoes...or was it Green Fried Tomatoes? Green tomato chutney...BLEH! Not what cats likes at all...

Flying Cat from veggies ptui!!

How come your peppers are not growing, Fred? Essential crop, i should imagine. Or do you have other ways to spice up your life? No, I did not ask.

mjc from NM,USA

Carol from IBHQ, better than gorging on the vegetables one has grown is feasting on the neighbor's tomatoes etc. No, I don't want a free ride. I offer to harvest, and save the neigbors from an overabundance ..., yes ma'am.

mjc from NM,USA

have just found you site,we have been reading all your comments over the last 12 months your house looks great, you must be very proud of what you have done, we are hoping to move up to lewis within the next 2 months and have found your experience very useful, along with all the tips. do you think my husband would be able to make a living as a mobile diesel mechanic, or would he be better off taking a job in garage in stornoway if he can get one, he really wants to work for himself, but we dont know what the demand would be. if you or anyone can offer any advice we would love to hear from all ann from wales

ann from south wales uk

Hi MJC......nice to hear from you again hope you well?, its ok I must be a little more patient the peppers are now slowly showing

Fred from Point

Ann from South Wales, good luck with your move and the job-hunting. Fred's blog is a bible for all would-be Lewisites! Hope you'll become an Island Blogger.

Jill from EK

Hi Ann, thanks for you comments there are plenty of opportunities here if your Husband wants to go it alone word of mouth and recommendation does really work, (1) if the service is good (2) keen prices. But there are many large haulage companys and Garages here too so good mechanics should not have a problem finding work here. Which part of Lewis are you moving too, Good luck with the move hope all goes well.

Fred from Point

thank's for your advice, we are hoping to rent a place in col for the time being, but would like to buy in the future, when we get settled and get to know the area. ian (my husband ) is encouraged by your comments with regard to working for himself, so if you ever need any work done on your car's you will know who to call. What is it like living there, did you find it very different and so what are the good or bad points? it's better to be prepared before we move as what to expect.thank's again for your advice.I will keep checking your blog to see how your veg are coming along. ann south wales

Flying Cat from dribblingalloverthejoint

FC lol how could you? mint sauce anyone. Hi Jo nice to see you joining in and being part of out life. Ann yes I know Coll near Back very nice place you will like it there.....I think the only advise I have is come and try, there are alot of People who come here and stay, and there are people who cant stand the winters? or for whatever reason. I cannot be judgemental each to thier own, but I can tell you I would never want to return to the mainland. It takes time getting to know people here but just go slowly slowly. I got to say I know more people here than I did back in the South. Once again good luck with the move Oh I have 2 cars that are diesel that will be handy? tell Ian.

Fred from Point

coming from south wales we are used to rain and sheep, so it should feel like home, one good thing is lewis is flat, I wont miss having to walk up hill to every thing. At the moment just running around getting things arranged,as we are bringing our dogs and cat, we are looking to drive up though skye and get the ferry there to harris or travel to ullapool/ stornoway, any advice? have passed your car requirements on to ian, maybe you could be his first customer when we finally get there. hope to meet you in person in the near future. thank's again ann south wales.

ann from south wales

Hi Ann, We travel to Sky (Uig) to Tarbert (Lewis) purely due to the ferry costs alot cheaper from Sky, except you have about 40 mins drive to your home....Its alot better than sitting on a ferry for nearly 3 hours, as my Family would not cope with that. See you soon, and Yes Ian may have his 1st customer as I have a car on the drive waiting to be looked at and I can wait till he gets here. Good luck with everything

Fred from Point

Lewis is flat? Nobody told me. I've been labouring under a delusion of misty heathery hills all these years, and now you tell me Lewis is flat. *Sigh*

Flying Cat from another dream shattered

FC, from my position of ignorance based on a fleeting visit, I think that Lewis is pretty flat and all the misty mountains are in Harris.

Jill from EK

Oh of course, they will insist its a separate island...when its really Higher Lewis...

Flying Cat from thanking Jill from Eek

Flat is it? No hillock for would be latter day Moses (Moseses?) to go on the look out for tablets? No mesas, no hills, no mountains. Coll sounds better and better: it even has an international airport that's expected to give Stornoway the look of a stone age landing site. Maybe the colorful inhabitants make up for the lack of rugged hills?

mjc from NM,USA

Hi Fred, I've got a message for you from someone who wants to get in touch. I e-mailled you yesterday or you can e-mail me at islandblogging@bbc.co.uk if your e-mail address has changed and I'll resend the message.

Carol from IBHQ

Hi Carol....I got your email OK thank you.

Fred from Point

Is there a big market for tablets on Lewis? Dearie me, is nowhere safe from the scourge of drugs...

Flying Cat from a Highland Park

oy FC, Harris is a seperate island and don't you forget it! collectively you may call them the Long Island. Both islands have hills, but Lewis probably wins out in regards to moorland, (aka prospective windfarm)
