Just hope it's done sensibly without any razzmatazz .

An artist is someone who does something exceptionally well.. For example, a consumer of alcohol may be referred to as a ....[insert qualifier].... artist.

What do call a number of paintings by the painter Jackson Pollock ? Apparently I got it wrong in msg 7 ?

IMO an "investment", they have little to do with art. But, art is a personal thing, one man's Pollocks are another man's Van Gogh's.

From the many trailers it looks like a mix of the old C4 series Watercolour Challenge and Sky Arts' Portrait Artist of the year. I liked both of those so will give it a go even if the idea isn't very original.

Oops thanks you are right it should be 18.00,

If it's just half as good as Portrait Artist Of The Year on Sky Arts, I'll be happy.....this year they are changing to Landscape Artist of the Year.

I agree. If it's half as good as Portrait Artist Of The Year on Sky Arts and twice as good as the Watercolour Challenge on C4 to which Hanna Gordon added a certain Fionce Bruceish perma presence, quoting poems, whilst looking dreamily into the distance whilst the camera looked dreamily into her earrnest countenance.
If it's to be about painting, please let it be about the painting.
[ note to HG ... Nothing personal ]

I love Sky's Portrait Artist of the Year so will be looking forward to this. Thanks for the heads up.
As someone who has no creative skill whatsoever I love watching others showing off their talent.
I am really looking forward to it as well.

From reading the link, I think it's going to be more like Sewing Bee in that the artists have to show a different skill every week.
I was gutted when Watercolour Challenge was cancelled.....I'm delighted this is starting soon!
I'm surprised they didn't call it............
The Great British Brush-Off
Watched the trailer yesterday, looks interesting, think I'll see how it turns out.

Me too, I got interested in watercolour whilst watching tv for something to occupy my mind whilst doing the ironing (Ashley Jackson on a different channel). Then along came watercolour Challenge, I responded to their "if you want to pursue this..." announcement at the end of the first series; was put on to a course in Newcastle which ultimately led to my retiring from fifteen years of teaching, then demonstrating art.
I hope that the BPC manages to inspire those of you who think (generally quite wrongly) that you have no talent, to take up the challenge and have a go.

I think it's a good thing. It works well on Bake Off and Sewing Bee so it's likely to work for this.
And I remember certain people making the same disparaging remarks about those two before they started!
The only down side of this is one of the presenters is Richard Bacon! Not my favourite by a long chalk.

I was thinking that as well. But maybe he won't be too annoying as he has the lovely Una Stubbs with him. She'll make up for him.

I was disappointed too when Watercolour Challenge finished. We have a nice memory though as we have an original from one of the series. It wasn't a winner but we love it.

I just saw a feature on the One Show about the Painting Challenge. In an excerpt I think I heard Richard Bacon asking one of the artist contestants " what would it mean to you to...?" .. [thinks : oh dear...]

Actually if you look at the rules they say you must be from the UK (although they do allow people from the Isle of Man too.... also no religious or political stuff so it looks like people thinking about submitting cartoons of a certain Prophet will be disappointed! And you must agree to the possibility of appearing on The One Show, the thought of which has put me right off...
A concern I raised in the other thread about people getting away with copying from other people's photographs seems to be addressed in clause 16 which says "The entry must be an original work of the entrant and must not infringe the rights of any other party". (Actually the Â鶹¹ÙÍøÊ×Ò³Èë¿Ú seem to be taking copyright infringement so seriously that I couldn't even copy and paste those words from the T&C document - the PDF seems to be encrypted, as when I tried to copy the text all that got pasted was random characters, so I had to type it by hand!)
I obviously didn't look hard enough, thanks Hy Dranger.
I taught art and design for over 30 years in a range of institutions. A lot of time was spent trying to get "amateurs" the students in leisure classes to work from observation. When I first started teaching I took over a big class of older learners who copied calender pictures, postcards, even Christmas cards, my endeavours left me with a class of six!
There is no substitute whilst learning (and we are all learning in art, all our lives) to work from real things. It is of my opinion that the demise of Adult Education art courses, is due, not purely from cuts, but a perceived notion that it is just "older people copying postcards", which wasn't the case where I was working, my learners got a broad education akin to a first term of an art foundation course.
I really hope this programme addresses the thorny subject of copying and also of purely technique based work, chucking salt on watercolours for instance.
I'm looking forward to this too, I think Una Stubbs looks fabulous at 77!
Like watching paint dry, an hour of this!
I'm surprised they didn't call it............

Brilliant
I'm waiting for the next load of skills to be made into a athon. The BIG Challenge of Corking, or how about A Bricklaying Competition
How can they judge paintings where the contestants use different methods of applying the paint for the same topic? For me that's subjective.
For Bake Off and the Sewing Bee there are set techniques which they all have to do and compared one with the other. Can't see how you can compare one person applying paint with a pallet knife with another applying it with a brush.

Come on, Â鶹¹ÙÍøÊ×Ò³Èë¿Ú, you can do better than this. It's about time you come up with some new ideas.
We've had Masterchef.
We've had Masterchef with sewing.
And now Masterchef with paint.
What's next? Masterchef with Web Design? Masterchef with brick laying? Masterchef with hole digging?
This format is getting so old, predictable, and so utterly fake and unrealistic. The only thing worse than this is that stupid magic program that's on Saturdays.
'Watercolour Challenge' with Hannah Gordon was much better than this.

agree with you......also there seems to be no connection between the contestants, the judges and the presenters.
the Telegraph has suggested that the programme makers have left out depth to their work.
I really like both Una Stubbs mad Richard Bacon ... they are not right for this prog.

I enjoyed it! Nice to see people doing something I can't do but really wish I could.
The problem is that TV flattens paintings so we don't see what the jduges see. A lot of the subtlety is lost.
The two presenters are a little quiet for me. I'm used to the madness of Mel and Sue and Claudia! But they both know what they are looking at so will probably get better.
And yes, the right one went home.
It has sparked an interest in my having a go at painting. Surely that is what this programme is about?

Struggled a bit with this programme - too much life history at the beginning. Tuned back in for the first judges' verdicts after first 20 minutes. Perhaps when they have fewer contestants it may go better. Something about the programme's "composition" not quite hitting the spot. Love the lovely Una though - such a sweetie!

I think that was just because it was the first one so they had to do a lot of setting up. I think the rest will get going a lot quicker.
Just noticed that "The Big Fish Off" is just starting on ITV4 so looks like other channels are joining the bandwagon stared by Â鶹¹ÙÍøÊ×Ò³Èë¿Ú.
Don't forget we've had "sporting" "Masterchef offs" on other channels. Bet there are already panels on the Â鶹¹ÙÍøÊ×Ò³Èë¿Ú bran storming what they can "off" next.
Wasn't impressed with the Painting Challenge - it was definitely subjective rather than objective.
Can remember at college one of the art students painting an arm with some brush strokes going vertical and some horizontal. I asked why and the reply was "Mr X says they should be horizontal and Mr Y says they should be vertical, so the direction depends on who is supervising us."
Can't think of any other subject (although there must be more than one) where there can be so much variety of technique, tools and materials in producing something.
'Watercolour Challenge' with Hannah Gordon was much better than this.Ìý
Agreed. Will watch some more of them, though.
A nice cross section of ages, styles, and abilities - its already evident which four or five are going to last through to the end (but don't ask me which ones as I'm hopeless at remembering names )
