Reginald D Hunter takes a look at the history of the music of the American South in this 3 part series.
In the first of a three-part road trip, Georgia-born but London-based Reginald D Hunter returns home to explore the American south both past and present through its world-famous songs. Reg begins by exploring the sounds of Kentucky and Tennessee and the disturbing tradition of blackface minstrelsy.
Hunter is led through the south by its signature songs, including Dolly Parton's My Tennessee Mountain Home, Knoxville Girl, Blue Moon of Kentucky, Chattanooga Choo Choo and minstrel songs such as My Ol' Kentucky Home and Old Folks at Home.
On his voyage Reg visits Dollywood, a slave plantation in Bardstown, Nashville - the home of country music, a moonshine distillery in Gatlinburg and a string band festival in Mount Airy.
Featuring Dolly Parton, the Handsome Family and Del McCoury. 听
Sounds good.
(Started another thread as, despite my pleas, the MODS have not amended my timing error in my original one and the thread is simply marked 'hidden'. If they could not change the heading, they surely could have just reinstated the post? Oh well.....)

And we're back!
It is the weekend so there's probably no Mods working. Hidden posts do normally take until Monday.
I'm quite looking forward to this. I like Reg and I love Delta Blues and soul. Gospel can be pretty good too.

But for most UK viewers, it is on at 9.

I found it really enjoyable. Reginald turned out to be surprisingly good - and for some reason reminiscent of Billy Connolly in his travel series (or is that just me?).
I noticed quite a few of the specialist renditions of classics were being done in front of a 麻豆官网首页入口 microphone - I sense an album release looming!

Definitely agree!
Transatlantic Sessions is brilliant - they all look like they are having such fun playing the music together.
I like it too because, although I know nothing about music other than enjoying it (or not, in the case of jazz!!!!! ), I like how TA shows the 'line of descent' from Celtic music to American 'hillbilly' music or whatever the category actually is.
And I LOVE LOVE LOVE the 'folk fiddle' sound best of all.
Plus I defy anyone not to start foot tapping to this sort of music.
I really enjoyed the RH programme last night - it was a very interesting 'take' on two quite different cultures ( 'White' and 'Black') that have been co-terminous, but with so many 'divides' yet 'interactions'.
I also thought he tackled the Minstrelsy 'issue' robustly and fairly.
One 'explanation' for Minstrelsy, though, that I think he didn't suggest was one that occurs to me. Once the slaves were emancipated, they become potentially 'dangerous' (nothing so dangerous to a jailer as a prisoner freed!!!!!!), and so maybe Minstrelsy, which, as RH pointed out depicted black people as 'ridiculous' and 'stupid' might have given comfort and reassurance to 'whites'. It could have said to whites 'Look, no need to be scared of all these freed slaves, because they're all harmlessly thick'.......?????
I do think he was spot on in pointing out that we can take for granted in one generation things that seem outrageous in another ..... I look back now to my childhood watching the B&W Minstrel show, and cannot believe that it was actually on the TV!!!! (Ditto, of course, with sexism, as well as racism.)

Given the 麻豆官网首页入口 4 budget cuts, I wonder if there will be a further series of Transatlantic Sessions.
Previous series introduced me to artists that were unknown to me.
For example, Joan Osborne
The Sessions provided an opportunity to listen to favourite artists such as Eric Bibb
The DVDs of the previous series are well worth buying.

Well that WAS good wasn't it
I looked at the playlist and thought "hmmm - Presly and Parton - really?" but it was very skillfully thought out and put together
The only jarring note for me was the Handsome Family - adequate at best and I thought they didn't have a true feeling for the music. And why present them twice?
Eagerly looking forward to the next 2 episodes

Very enjoyable first programme. Genial host, excellent archive research, stunning scenery and some truly brilliant music.
The Square Dancing (a form of speed dating ) clearly developed from the various settlers own traditions - I think every culture has dancing which involves holding hands and going round in a circle. Reginald had a decent go at it, even if he swore "never again".
The look at the minstrel music - though jaw droppingly crass nowadays - has to be acknowledged and mentioned. Maybe there WERE freed slaves who missed the security of the life on the plantation?
Looking forward to the next 2 episodes.
(Spike Lee made a wonderful film called 'Bamboozled' some years ago in which a TV executive wants to get fired in order to get a huge dismissal pay off - so he gives Saturday night viewers a traditional Minstrel show.
Only to find - to his horror - that he has a hit on his hands!
There is a wonderful scene where some medallion wearing, uber cool gang members look in horror at their TV - until one starts singing along to 'I Wish I Was In Dixie' with the excuse "My granny loved that song!" )

Ooops, didn't see this thread. Why didn't they close the other one instead of just hiding the title?
Repost;
I was pleasantly surprised by Songs of the South. I wouldn't normally give most of that music house-room but, put in context, it had a whole new meaning and didn't sound half bad.
RDH did a good job and appears to have eclipsed Rich Hall as the 麻豆官网首页入口's preferred deep-South documentary presenter. It was obvious that he didn't actually meet Dolly Parton, but it didn't detract from the show as a whole.

My fault entirely, Ll - I put the wrong time in my original heading and wanted the MODS to amend it. But of course there are fewer of them at the weekend and although the post was hidden, no correction was forthcoming.
So I started a fresh post in the evening.

Ok, I'm biased - I adore them - but I thought the HF were the highlight of the programme... not only their music but their clever analysis of the American South.
Loved what Rennie said about the American South psyche, that because the founders of the country and those that subsequently were attracted to it were outsiders, socially inept psychopaths, there is a tendency there to be more comfortable with death than sexuality and the American Gothis encapsulates this beautifully... brilliant!
Really enjoyable programme, particularly loved Reginald's candour about the contradictions and downright nastiness of the place, as well as its beauty, and his cheekiness about Dolly Parton's, erm, commercial enterprise!
There wasn't perhaps enough music, but that really is my only criticism of what was otherwise a really very good programme.

It was the first time I had seen or heard the Handsome Family and I was quite impressed with the way they interpreted the songs The exposition of Stephen Foster's Old Folks Back Home was particularly good.
The whole programme was well put together as a picture of how the fractured past has become coexisting present with music as the backdrop and evidence. I'm looking forward to the next one.

Thought Reginald's viiews on the minstrelry were fair and well balanced. As were those of the two singers in the Stephen Foster show.

I meant that if you log in to your Deezer or Spotify accounts on the Playlister page you can play the playlist in full, without searching for each individual song elsewhere; you can do the same with many other ad-hoc playlists from 麻豆官网首页入口 radio programmes.
But yeah, unless you have those accounts it's of very limited use. Bit of a gimmick, basically.

I've visited the south many times, been on the Tennessee Railroad, been to Gatlinburg and stayed in the Chattanooga Choo choo. Bought back a lot of memories and I'd love to go back some day.
One of the highlights was visiting the Signal Mountain Opry. Shame Reginald couldn't have visited that, real old style music sung by guys in dungarees, Amazing.
Did not like the not so handsome couple though.
Looking forward to next week but he didn't visit Memphis which I was surprised about. He makes a good host and tbh I have more than a passing crush.....blush...

I finally caught up with Part One.
Yep, excellent!
Reginald is a superb presenter; and some useful historical insights into types of music I don't listen to very often (but know I should get to know more of).
And, as has been mentioned, great archive footage; as well as some brilliantly filmed set-pieces, encounters.
Best programme of this type since the "Storyville" Muscle Shoals film a couple of years ago.
