‘Diggiloo Diggiley’ was 1984’s winning song for Sweden and the three Herreys brothers (Per, Richard and Louis). Sweden’s best-selling pop act in the ‘80s, Herreys gave the country its second ever victory, ten years after ABBA won in Brighton with ‘Waterloo'.
We felt like we had won Olympic gold, it was fantastic. It was a humbling moment.Louis Herrey
The song is about the lead singer discovering a pair of golden shoes which, when he puts on, immediately make him feel like dancing! The three wore golden boots, which became an iconic Eurovision image. And that wasn’t all that got them noticed... Their very clean-cut hair was picked up on by Swedish Eurovision participant Tommy Körberg, resulting in him calling them the dancing deodorants. Luckily for them, the name stuck with them for the rest of their career!
Since Eurovision, Herreys continued performing, but took a break in 1987 when Louis left the group on a religious mission. Thankfully though, their break wasn’t to be forever, and last year saw them reunite to celebrate the 30th anniversary of their Eurovision win.
